"The purpose of art is not the release of a momentary ejection of adrenaline but rather the gradual, lifelong construction of a state
of wonder and serenity." Glen Gould

Desy Safán-Gerard’s career is consumed by three passions, music, painting and psychoanalysis.

Working as a psychoanalyst she has published clinical and research papers on creativity, showing how mistakes and emotions derived from envy and guilt are an integral part of the creative process. Her patients encompass a broad spectrum of professions: painters, actors, musicians, writers and scientists. Desy is a Supervising and Training Analyst at the Psychoanalytic Center of California (PCC) in Los Angeles.

As a painter, Desy captures the interaction and interplay of structures and colors, which become an intrinsic part of her abstractions. An introduction to her paintings and her prolific output can be found in the archival website addresses Desy's passion for music by weaving it into her abstractions. In her recent tributes to Dmitri Shostakovich and Pierre Boulez she is able to translate their music into her paintings, where melody and tempo become inexorably embedded within visual images. In her most recent, and highly unique body of work, Desy relates harmony to motion by painting with both hands as her model moves in response to music. Such remarkable transcendence from composer - through model - to artist is captured in the brief film above.
